Royal Marine Veterans raise over £60,000 for charity

Earlier this year, we were honoured to pledge our support to our friends at the Royal Marines Veterans Speed March Team, who were taking on the mammoth task of completing a marathon-distance speed march with 40lb packs on their backs.

This was done to raise awareness of the issues surrounding Veterans’ mental health and the impact it also has on family and friends. We are pleased to say that the group completed the marathon on Sunday 21st July 2024, in an impressive 5 hours and 15 mins!

The Royal Marines Veterans Speed March Team includes a group of 12 retired Royal Marines, all over the age of 45, whose aim was to increase the understanding of the mental health challenges that veterans face but also raise much-needed funds for the Royal Marines Charity. The speed march started at 5am and took place across the streets of London and saw the 12 men take on a 26-mile march, which included a variation of running, walking and marching to complete the distance, along with heavy military boots and loaded backpacks – if the challenge wasn’t difficult enough! The men were cheered on by supporters that followed their journey throughout the day, passing many iconic London locations including Buckingham Palace. The finish line for the group was The Royal Marines Memorial at the end of The Mall.

The team had an initial target of £60,000 to reach by the end of their march through their JustGiving page but we are pleased to say they have far succeeded that target with a staggering £65,000 now raised!

Zip World were proud to give the team our full support as the cause is close to our hearts with Zip World’s owner, Sean Taylor, being a former Royal Marine himself. Our support meant they received a donation to their charity and sponsored Mountain Equipment uniform of the highest quality to wear as they trained and whilst they completed the march. The team have also visited us on multiple occasions to use our locations for training purposes, including back in December 2023 at our Penrhyn Quarry Zip World site. The team used our 3km slate track to train for the event, along with accommodation and of course a ride on Velocity to get back to the bottom.
